Sustainability.

This week I have been busy sewing bags for The Sustainability Festival in Federation Square in Melbourne from 19-21st February. The bags are made from upcycled pillow cases (one printed with '5 Principles of Shopping with a Conscience') and men's ties. The bags are made for The Ethical Consumer Group and connect with their values of: local and Australian made, ethical, fairly traded, sustainable and recycled. The Women's Sewing Project will be making these bags in the future, but we are not up to that level just yet!

It is a wonderfully exciting opportunity for me, to be able to sew for such a great cause and an opportunity I am sure will open more doors in the future.

Definition of Upcycling: It is the process of converting waste materials or useless products or outdated products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value.
Upcycling refers to reusing an object in a new way without degrading the material it is made from, as opposed to recycling which generally involves breaking down the original material and making it into something else, using more energy.

  4. Thanks so much, Kath & Bec :)

For each bag, one pillow case has been screen-printed - they really look impressive! Amazing what can be done with a pillowcase... I will also post the reversible little girl's dress I have made from pillowcases too :) Fun!
